The nomination of Turkey to the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), for inscription of the Göbekli Tepe Archaeological Site on UNESCO World Heritage List has been adopted during the ongoing 42nd UNESCO World Heritage Committee session in Manama, Bahreyn, and the site has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Göbekli Tepe, which is located within the borders of the province of Şanlıurfa and has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List of Turkey since 2011. It is the world’ soldest known megalithic structure located in Upper Mesopotamia and dates back to 11.000 years ago.

As a result of intensive efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the adoption of this decision, the number of inscribed sites of Turkey on UNESCO World Heritage List has reached to eighteen.
