No: 394, 21 December 2017, Press Release regarding the Adoption of the Draft Resolution on Jerusalem Submitted to the United Nations General Assembly

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 21.12.2017

We welcome with great pleasure the adoption of the draft resolution on Jerusalem, submitted to the UN General Assembly by Turkey and Yemen in their capacity as the Summit Chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Chair of the Arab League respectively, with the support of 128 Member States.

The international community has thereby demonstrated its commitment to the UN resolutions and international law regarding Jerusalem despite unethical pressure and threats by the United States. This result has unequivocally shown the illegality of the U.S. Administration’s unfortunate decision. As a result, the U.S. veto in the Security Council on December 18 has lost its validity and meaning.

As was the case in the UN Security Council, the overwhelming majority of the international community has rejected the US decision which is inconsistent with the conscience of humanity.

We hope that the United States will draw the necessary lessons from this process and adopt a stance compatible with international law and UN parameters in relation to Jerusalem in the future. We also call upon each and every responsible member of the international community to monitor the implementation of this important resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly.
