Press Release Regarding the Sentencing of Mr. Mohamed Morsi, Former President of Egypt, to Imprisonment

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 22.04.2015

No: 125, 22 April 2014

We deplore the sentencing of the former President of Egypt Mr. Mohamed Morsi, who took office by popular will following the first free elections in Egypt, but forcibly ousted in 2013 by a military coup to 20-years in prison, after criminal court proceeding where he was tried together with others.

Arbitrary trials disregarding international standards, carried out since the military coup against a certain segment of the Egyptian people, increase suspicions concerning the objectivity of the verdict against former President Morsi and aggravate concerns about the future of democracy in Egypt.

Our sincere calls towards addressing the Egyptian people’s legitimate demands for a genuine democracy and the rule of law are still valid.
